Being the third vintage of my two “old vine” vineyard sources blend, this wine has much potential for richness and aging.Capiaux Bottle shot

Old vine pinot is rarely identified so with this, I hope to start a trend. Starscape Vineyard, formerly Floodgate Vineyard, is in the Northern part of Russian River Valley bordering Mark West Creek within the unofficial sub-region known as Middle Reach. Planted in 1971, these old Martini clone vines are among the oldest known Pinot Noir in Russian River. The effects of annual flooding mark these craggy, thick 50-year-old vines yielding less than a ton an acre. I'm so pleased with the unique character and striking quality this old vineyard delivers. I've had access to Widdoes Vineyard for 26 years; named for its owner, Don Widdoes, and farmed by Dutton Ranch who planted Beringer clones of Pinot Noir in 1982, vertical trained and dry farmed. The soil is quintessential Russian River Goldridge fine sandy loam. Located just West of the little town of Graton, it is a magical location for pinot noir. The fog rolls in first and burns off late in this Green Valley sub-appellation consistently producing a wine of finesse and balance.

Dark purple in color with a semi-opaque center and purple hue on the edge of the glass. Great aromas of black berry, cherry compote, crushed red and black fruit, light forest floor character. Fine balance of tannin and acid creating a velvety texture with fresh berry flavors.

"...such a gorgeous wine. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender and licorice convey plenty of old vine richness and gravitas. All the elements come together so well. In this tasting the Old Vine stands out for its depth and pure power, both of which it expresses without being overly heavy. It is my favorite wine in this range, and a terrific value in artisan Pinot. In a word: superb.” Drinking Window 2022-2029.Tasting Date: Sept 2020"

"...is a blend of fruit from the Widdoes and Starscape vineyards. It has a medium ruby color and beautiful aromas of blood orange, earth, iron, iodine and kaleidoscope of spices and floral notes. The palate is silky and fresh with layers of citrus, lush fruits and mineral touches. It finishes very long and uplifted.” Drinking Window 2021-2027 Tasting Date: June 2021"
