What started in 1982 as just two acres of vines planted at the edge of the family's horse ranch, Gary Pisoni has expanded to 45 acres. Grapevines contour on and around the rugged mountain range in what is now known as Santa Lucia Highlands. The vineyard is primarily decomposed granite with large deposits of quartz. Gravelly soils stress the vines and lower yields. Fog blankets the vineyard maintaining cool temperatures that retain vibrant acidity and aromatics. Farming practices are rooted in Burgundian tradition and sustaining the land which his family has tilled for three generations.

In the glass a deep, dark burgundy hue. Smokey, leathery, earthy aromas deliver on similar flavors of charcuterie, charred game, plum and dark fruit. Characteristically masculine body. Medium tannins with a sweet oak finish.

“…another super-expressive wine in this range from Sean Capiaux. The Pisoni was fermented in concrete – with some whole clusters, and that very much comes through in the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile.” Tasting Date: Sept 2019

Purely Domestic Wine Report/Wilder 96pts

The nose is rosemary, subtle lavender and blossom with notes of desert underbrush. The palate is dominated by textured mint, plum and waxy Luxardo cherry with notes of herb, espresso and tobacco. It takes about 30 minutes to open up, worth the wait. Drink 2021 -2030.
