Capiaux Cellars grape source Pisoni Vineyard in late summer

Fall 2020 Releases

Vinous/Galloni  93pts

“…pliant, racy and super-expressive. A burst of sweet red cherry and red plum gives the Starscape its forward, juicy personality. There is plenty of energy behind all of that fruit, but the 2018 needs a few years in bottle to be at its most rewarding. The personality of this low-yielding site planted with the Martini clone comes through in the wine’s sheer density and raciness. I love it.” Tasting Date: Sept 2019

Purely Domestic Wine Report/Wilder 92pts

The nose is deep, offering sticky fig, forest floor and date with notes of chocolate. The palate entry is gravelly spiced plum with a core of velvet-like black stone fruit and berries leading to a lean, toasted finish of dry red fruit and spice box. Drink 2020 - 2028

“…another super-expressive wine in this range from Sean Capiaux. The Pisoni was fermented in concrete – with some whole clusters, and that very much comes through in the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile.” Tasting Date: Sept 2019

Purely Domestic Wine Report/Wilder 96pts

The nose is rosemary, subtle lavender and blossom with notes of desert underbrush. The palate is dominated by textured mint, plum and waxy Luxardo cherry with notes of herb, espresso and tobacco. It takes about 30 minutes to open up, worth the wait. Drink 2021 -2030.

“…plush, deep and enveloping. It is also a bit darker and more resonant in feel than most of the other Pinots in the range. Dark red/purplish fruit, black cherry, spice, menthol and lavender are some of the many notes that meld together in a super-attractive, mid-weight yet juicy Pinot that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The Wilson is all 777 clone Pinot and really comes through in its exuberance. Floral and spice overtones add the closing shades of nuance.” Tasting Date: Sept 2019

“…a blend from Widdoes and Starscape, both planted with Martini clone, which tends to give an especially aromatic, exotic Pinot. Blood orange, mint, spice, star anise and kirsch all lift from the glass. Like all of these Pinots, the Old Vine is a bit clenched today, and yet its potential is evident. This is such a pretty and distinctive wine with a ton of underlying energy that just needs a bit of time to be at its most expressive.” Tasting Date: Sept 2019
